Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails is one of the people I respect professionally the most. He understands and loves the medium he is working in.The way it changes and evolves from conception to distribution and marketing. It is more important that he understands it than that he practices it. He embraces change. Just take a look at his position on electronically distributed content. The latest NIN album was given away for free and the one before had a new kind of pricing model. You can download the samples, mix and remix the song restricted by your own will while the industry tries to squeeze more and more money out of you and gives you less and less rights. The old distribution model is broken and this is a much needed change. You cannot fake this passion! Britney Spears would do that(read her boss), because she is just a product.
Recently I was offered a job as creative director at a Romanian advertising agency. I declined the proposal because, while I think that the advertising medium is an exciting one and the job conditions were even better, I don’t have the same passion for the advertising medium as I have for the interaction design medium. This is what I want to do with my life.
I believe that one can never be happy as long as he is not doing the job he wants. A lot of us think that when they are retired they will be happy. True happiness for me is earning a living of my passion.
I want to be the Trent Reznor of interaction design not the Britney Spears of anything.
